Are you being pursued by debt collectors or intimidated by your angry creditors, want to get a grip of it all and start to get on with your life again? We can help. Emergency first steps to getting to grips with debt. I know its tempting but... Don't throw your brown envelopes in the bin! If you cant face opening them on a daily basis, place them carefully to one side until you feel relaxed and have time to open and deal with them. However, you must make that time at least once every seven days. You will need to know quickly if anyone decides to take legal action against you and act fast. Start to keep a record of every conversation you have, with lenders, creditors, debt collectors, etc., by phone, by mail or in person. We provide some space in the workbook for you to do this. Be aggressive on the phone. Get names and write them down, demand them if they are not forthcoming, it is your right to know whom you are talking too! Record also and including, any agreements reached or compromises made. Make a file, perhaps with a separator or pocket in to house this information from each complainant. Save all related mail, especially postmarked and dated envelopes. If you have to send anyone any documents, sent them registered post 'To be signed for' This way, if anyone should try to claim that they have not received your information, you can call the post office and find out who took receipt of the package. If you have to send anything extremely urgent, fax them, and keep the special fax receipt, which is dated, has the phone number of the recipient and even states that the fax went through to them correctly. Be courteous and diplomatic, but make it clear to everyone involved that you know your rights, are keeping careful records, and refuse to be intimidated by any 'Bully Boy Tactics'. Be calm and remember they can kill you but they can't eat you. By this I mean, stop worrying. I know its bad, but we can advise you on how to resolve it all - to coin a phrase from Gloria Gaynor remember this mantra... I Will Survive! Baby Steps - for debt consolidation and resolution Now, have you organized your file? Please now make a definitive, master list, of how much and who you owe money too - Include their phone numbers, and the rate of interest that they are charging you on this master list beside each entry for each. Now sit down and take a few calming breathes - I realize you may need them at this point as it can go either way when you do this. Either you will look t it and think, hmmm not as bad as I thought, or you will be reeling with shock thinking 'how much?' Try to stay calm if your reaction is the later. Now, the tricky part... put this to one side for now and in a fresh file (Yes you will need two few files) Now this may be the most painful task of all so be warned... Go to our budgeting section and work out a careful (but realistic) budget for your self and your family if you have one. All the help and advice you will need for this task can be found on out budgeting page. Now, you will have to work this out carefully, and enlist the agreement and support of other family members on sticking to this rigidly. Now... see what figure you have left over to enable you to reduce your debts? Maybe it is more-or less what you think. Don't worry about this. Now... I know that this is extremely boring and even scary for some of you, but if you are going to be in charge of your financial future you are going to have to do this, take a look at the interest rate you are being charged by each creditor. Is it high, low or average? Grade them in order and take a good hard long look. 6% is low 30% or more is very high. Let me explain why it is important for you to know this figure.
